Civil Registration for England and Wales
Civil Registration of births, deaths and marriages began in England and Wales in the 3rd quarter of 1837 but was not required until 1875. These records have been indexed and the index for each year is divided into quarters (1Q=Jan-Mar, 2Q=Apr-Jun, 3Q=Jul-Sep, 4Q=Oct-Dec). These indices are essential for pinpointing the year and quarter before sending for certificates.

All LDS Family History Centres have complete sets of microfilmed indexes for the period from 3Q 1837 to 1903 (1906 for births). Subsequent years are recorded on fiche and are added to the collections of each centre as the users order them so availability is spotty.

All indexes contain the registration district and the St Catherine's House district code and volume number.

  • The index for births contains the full name of the child and, from the third quarter of 1911, it also contains the mother's maiden surname.
  • The index for marriages generally contains two entries each containing the full name of one spouse and, from 1912, the surname of the other.
  • The index for deaths contains the full name of the deceased and, after 1865, the age at death.
